Occasions are everywhere. Why do we wake up in the morning? Why do we get dressed? There's always an occasion to be preparing for. In Frank Bruni's "Love, Death, and Sochi", the occasion is obvious. There has been a long and hard fought war about homosexuality spanning worldwide, and it is far from over. Many countries participating in the Olympics support homosexuality, while others have chosen to oppose. This article was written before the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi Russia, where homosexuality is illegal. Not all Americans find this subject as near and dear to their heart as other civil rights issues. At least we, as a government, are not publicly humiliating and tormenting the homosexual population. The immediacy of this topic is we are traveling to this place in a time of celebration and competition when something we believe in is being challenged. Russia is telling us flat out "we do not support homosexuality," and "we do not condone your support in it". We are turning a blind eye from a group of people being bullied. Frank is showing us these facts that are triggering emotion, calling us to action.
